Vertical integration

One chain from the field to milk and meat

We grow and mix our own feed, so its quality and cost stay under control. Every grain becomes a high-value product: milk, cheese, fresh meat.

Who we are

The Israeli school of dairy farming

Ziv Matalon Consultant & Management is an Israeli company founded by Ziv Matalon in 2006. Before that he spent 13 years as Vice Chairman of the Israel Dairy & Beef Board and 5 years as milk quota manager under the Minister of Agriculture.

The Israeli cow is among the most productive in the world, at 12,000 litres per lactation. We bring that experience to projects worldwide. We are not only consultants: the company owns a dairy farm in Israel and a stake in a large feed centre, so everything we recommend has been tested on our own operation first.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

What does Ziv Matalon Consultant & Management do?

It is an Israeli consultancy founded in 2006 by Ziv Matalon. We design, build and bring to full capacity dairy and beef farms, feed centres and feed mills, and we organise feed crop production. We take on single facilities as well as complete field-to-product projects.

Which countries have you worked in?

The company has projects in 32 countries: Israel, the USA, Russia (more than 20 regions), Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Cyprus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, India, China, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Angola, Benin, Nigeria, Chad, Senegal, Honduras, Cuba, Sweden, Tanzania, Indonesia, North Macedonia and Albania.

Do you only work on new farms?

No. We build farms from scratch, and we also audit, upgrade and manage operating farms. We have carried out farm audits for banks and for ministries of agriculture.

What size of operation do you design?

Dairy farms from 100 to 5,000 cows, goat dairies of up to 8,000 head and feedlots of up to 10,000 bulls. At one point Ziv Matalon managed 10 farms with 15,000 head of cattle and 100,000 ha of field crops.

What is vertical integration in livestock farming?

It is a single business that covers the whole chain: fields grow the feed, a feed centre mixes the ration, the dairy farm produces milk, its bull calves are fattened for beef, milk and meat are processed into finished products, and manure goes back to the fields as fertiliser. Feed cost and product quality stay under your control.

How long does it take to build an integrated complex?

Usually 2–3 years, in stages. In year one the fields and the feed centre start up, in year two the farm is built and the herd arrives, and in year three the complex reaches full capacity.

Why the Israeli dairy model?

An Israeli cow produces an average of 12,000 L of milk per 305-day lactation, one of the highest yields in the world. The result comes from a system: loose housing for cow comfort, a balanced TMR ration, digital herd management and strong genetics. We adapt this system to local conditions.

Does your model work in cold climates?

Yes. Our farms have operated in Russia for years, including the Voronezh, Lipetsk and Kirov regions and Karelia. Loose-housing barns and individual calf hutches have been proven through Russian winters.
